Lock pages in memory.

If SQL Server is running on Local System account, does it automatically
have the "Lock Pages in memory" right or does this have to be manually
set?
If manual, which account is the Local System, in the list of domain accounts
that appears in gpedit.msc.
Any help greatly appreciated.Help me here<g>
I need to know this, in order to tell whether my sql server local
system account is managing awe memory properly.
Please...

If the "lock pages in memory " permission is not granted you should have
seen error in the errorlog.
In the SQL Server log, you will see the following message:
Cannot use Address Windowing Extensions because lock memory privilege was
not granted.

Local database and updates

I'm reviewing an application that uses a local database for a .NET
application. In adding logic to automatically update components of the
application (content files, assemblies updates, and data updates) I found
that the original design locks the database while the app is running. This
means that the updater code needs to detect a runnning instance of the .NET
app and signal it to close down before it can apply database updates. This
makes it impossible to apply updates automatically.
It seems to me that tightly linking the database to the .NET app is
unnecessary. I see no reason why the database cannot be updated while the
application is running. The updater itself could lock portions of the
database during updating to prevent corruption and then signal the
application to refresh its in-memory data once the updates have been
committed.
I'd appreciate any feedback from others about this issue as I want to be
sure that I've thought through all the possibilities.
TIA.

I obviously do not know the application and the archithecture behind it, but
your words seems to indicate a need for single access to the data...
I will not enter a discussion about the requirements theme selves as, again,
I'm completely ignorant about theme, and I think you have to deal with the
producer(s) for more details...

the application must support a way to be notified of such an underlying
manipulation of data to allow that, an this could imply an architectural
modification... and this could be a potential big deal, depending on the
original design..

local computer Admin through AMO?

Hi everybody.

I know that members of the Administrators local group of the local computer where SQL Server 2005 is installed are automatically members of the server role in an instance of Analysis Services.

My problem is that in my application, through AMO I am able to see the Analysis Services server administrator added explicitally in the server role, ma am not able to obtain also the ones who are AS server administrators because inherit from the Administrators local group.

Does anyone can suggest me how to obtain also this list, through AMO, ADOMD.NET or something else?

Thank you so much.

Your statement "members of the Administrators local group of the local computer where SQL Server 2005 is installed are automatically members of the server role" is not entirely correct.

Yes, members of local Administrators group are AS admins, but that is not through membership in the server role. Actually after installation the server role membership is empty. The local Administrators are just given the admn right to AS bypassing the server role membership.

You can use server property BuiltinAdminsAreServerAdmins to revoke rights of local admins.

Thank you very much for your kind answer.

Actually the property BuiltinAdminsAreServerAdmins is very useful for us to check if the local admins are also AS admins or not.

Our application wouldn't like to prevent this behaviour, but simply needs to retrieve all the AS admins: both the ones added in the server role, both the ones who have the admin rights bypassing the server role membership, because inherit from the local group, if the BuiltinAdminsAreServerAdmins is set to True.

Could you suggest us a way? Maybe we should directly extract the members of the local admin group? Do you know a way to do this, because I am not aware of such an instruction (we are using C#).

Thank you very much.

Yes, you would have to query for the memebership in the local admin group.

Some simple search should give you quite a few C# samples like this one http://www.thecodeproject.com/csharp/groupandmembers.asp. I am sure you would find more.
