Lock_timeout
in EM (SQL7) i got the following errormessage, when i click on
current activity:
"Error: 1222 lock request time out period exceeded"
I run the sp_who /sp_who2, but nothing is blocked.
I set the lock_timeout th 5000, but it does not help.
Does anyone have an idea ?
best regards
Martinnetwork traffic is an idea
try to change for instance from tcp/ip to netbeui, or vice versa as the protocol you use to connect to the db server
see what happens.
also try to run a performance monitor to the db server.
check for cpu usage and latches.
if avg.latch wait time is high, ie. over 1000 and total latch wait time is also high i.e. over 100 for instance, then you probably experience sql server locks (watch for lock timeout /second)...
this can mean that the server is small, the app is poor, problem with your net h/w...
but this is some place to start with...
Cheers.|||Thanks for help Arounis,
network traffic is not possible, because i can log on to the server an got
the same error message.
For remember: I only get the error message, when i click on current activity in EM. No User told me that a problem still exits.
Checking avg.latch time and total latch time results:
520 constant for avg latch time
0 - 16 for total latch time.
You don't think that the problem occours about a "user - transaction" ?
Martin|||Try seeing if there is a locked resource which doesn't have a corresponding entry in sysprocesses
select *
from master..syslocks a
left join master..sysprocesses b on a.spid = b.spid
where b.spid is null
You shouldn't get any results.
Don't know what to tell you if you get any results.|||Thanks Wilso_s, but i get no results.
One more detail i detected, is that i can't access the
tempdb in EM. EM hangs up.
This short KB artikel Q308518 describes problems with
tempdb, but there is no workaround.
Maybe a restart will help ?

Lock Timeout
"Server: Msg 1222, Level 16, State 54, Line 15
Lock request time out period exceeded."
when I run the following query
"SET ROWCOUNT 10000
declare @.counter bigint

set @.counter = 0

set @.counter = @.counter + 1
print '@.counter = ' + cast(@.counter as varchar(10))
delete from dbname..tabname
where process_dt = CONVERT(SMALLDATETIME,'10/13/2005')
IF @.@.ROWCOUNT = 0
BREAK
END
SET ROWCOUNT 0"
I checked in my Query Analyzer options and I've got lock timeout set to 120
seconds. But the above query fails instantly, so it's not even waiting the
120 seconds. What gives? Any tips would be much appreciated.
Nevermind. I figured it out.

Lock problem when inserting and deleting records
Hi all.
I have an application that is using a SQL compact edition database to save/process information.
I run a test that is creating two threads:
1. one is inserting data in Table1
2. the other one is deleting records from Table1
When I run the application, I get some exceptions on both threads saying that the insert/delete could not aquire a lock on the table.
After a while, when I try to connect to the database I get an exception saying that the database file might be corrupted.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.
Hello,
Can you send me the database, and if possible, tell me (or give me) the app, so that, I can see what the issue is? Send it to goteti.udaya.bhanu@.gmail.com. And also, let me know which version of SQL CE are you using (3.1 or 3.0 etc...). Are you using ADO.NET or a native app to do this. Can you send me the code.
Thanks
Udaya.
|||The db has a very simple structure:
2 tables with strings and datetimes as columns data types.
I am using SQLCE 3.1 version and ADO.NET. So, there is no native call from my code.
Thanks.

|||Hello,
I have tried to repro the issue, with SQLCE 3.1, but, could not. I need one more detail for that, I think. Which version of .NET are you using? Are you using .NET CF or .NET (on a device or on the desktop)?
Thanks
Udaya.
|||If your both threads are doing DML operations on the same thread at the same time, there is a good chance that you experience locking issues. It could be that both operations need a lock on the same index page and one of them is denied lock for a long time (2000 msec or some thing like that). This looks okay to me. We are trying to improve the experience.
How to solve it? You might solve the above problem by either handling the error or serializing your actions. In the first approach you might want to just catch the error and retry the operation.
But why file corruption? This should not happen. Unless we look into your code, it's difficult to explain. Can you please try using different connection objects in these two threads?
Thanks

Lock hint question
I have a question about lock hint for you :
If the first user currently run a select command
with share lock and hold it. What kind of
lock (lock hint) should be used by the second user
in the select command (from the same table) so that
this command will wait until the first user releases
the lock ?
I have tried using tablock, tablockx, xlock and
updlock hint in the select command for the second
user, but it is not successful. Below is my
unsuccessful test :
The first user :
Begin Transaction
select fprefix from ut1 where fprefix = '000'
The second user :
select * from ut1 with (tablockx)
Please help me
Thanks in advance

With the default READ COMMITTED transaction isolation level, any locks
acquired during the select will be released when the select completes. The
second user will then be able to acquire any type of lock on the table.
The example below will override the default isolation level:
The first user :
SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL SERIALIZABLE
BEGIN TRAN
SELECT fprefix FROM ut1 WHERE fprefix = '000'
The second user :
SELECT * FROM ut1 WITH (TABLOCKX)
Of course, this approach reduces concurrency. See the Books Online
<tsqlref.chm::/ts_set-set_74bw.htm> for more information.

Hope this helps.

I guess one of your transaction still opened, and locking some resource.
First, you should try with sp_who2 to see which spid is blocking your query.
After that if you have the spid, try to run dbcc inputbuffer(#)

This will probably show what this spid run last.
Another good thing is, that you can run sp_lock #

This will show the resources blocked by the spid
(if you have the object_id , use select object_name(#object_id) to obtain
the name of the resource)

I guess one of your transaction still opened, and locking some resource.
First, you should try with sp_who2 to see which spid is blocking your query.
After that if you have the spid, try to run dbcc inputbuffer(#)
(write the spid number instead of the #)
This will probably show what this spid run last.
Another good thing is, that you can run sp_lock #
(write the spid number instead of the #)
This will show the resources blocked by the spid
(if you have the object_id , use select object_name(#object_id) to obtain
the name of the resource)
I hope it will help

Hi
I'd run SQL Server Profiler to capture events while you execute the query.
Also, review your query , do you have indexes on the table, how many rows
your query returns?

LocalSqlServer
I finally got my website to run on the local machine. I thought it was going to run on the server but I just get my login. After I enter my info and click "login" I get the following error. Do I need to enable the SQL Server Browser service?
Server Error in '/' Application.
Configuration Error

Perhaps, but that isn't what is causing the error. You haven't configured a connection string with the name "LocalSqLServer".

|||These are things wrong so far:
Your web.config file does not turn membership on.
Your web.config file does not have a membership provider defined (Which is fine if you want to use the default one).
You do not have a connection string that the default membership provider is configured to use (LocalSqlServer) defined in the connection strings section.
Apparently your host doesn't support Sql Server, yet you are trying to use a .MDB file (That's a Sql Server file). Perhaps you meant that your host only supports Sql Server Express (BTW, that's backwards from most hosting services -- Most support Sql Server but not Sql Server Express).

Localize Report
time of a report, so I wanted to ask what is the "best practice" of deploying
the reports if you have some clients that might want to view 'English'
reports and others who might want to view 'German' reports. I'd like to
avoid having duplicate reports, but it really sounds like this is my only
option.
Any ideas you have or suggestions of articles to read on the topic would be
greatly appreciated!
DanYou could put all of the formatting and vocabulary in functions, and vary
them based on a parameter, using =Iif(...) or =Switch(...)
With this approach, or with a duplicate report approach, you could adopt an
automated search/replace process to go through the RDL file and alter it to
support multiple languages.

Localization Controls
E.g. when you a run a report which has currency column the report designer
should format the column with the currency format present in the system's
control panel (Regional Settings)In short, both are supported. Localisation is easy, with the in-built
format codes, eg. 'c' for currency.
Globalisation is trickier, requiring some code. Generally the
System.Globalization namespace has most things in that you'll need.
One thing to note though is that the designer is an absolute pig with
non-US dates. Generally the reports are OK when deployed though.

localizing currencies & dates based on the regional settings? I tried using
FORMATCURRENCY in my reports, but it did not help

In the "format" property of a cell, if you use "c2" for currency (with
2 decimal places) it will format the currency and number format
according to the locale of the users PC. e.g In UK, 12345.99 would be
£12,345.99 in the US $12,345.99 and in France (I'm guessing a bit
here!) I would expect something like 12.345,99â?¬. 'n' for numeric I
believe work's the same.
In RS2000 BOL a list of format codes can be found at;
ms-help://MS.RSBOL80.1033/RSCREATE/htm/rcr_creating_layout_v1_365w.htm
and try these links for further info.
ms-help://MS.RSBOL80.1033/rsadmin/htm/drp_deploying_v1_0vaa.htm
ms-help://MS.RSBOL80.1033/RSCREATE/htm/rcr_creating_building_v1_31bn.htm
As for some sample code, I wrote this some time ago in RS2000.
Essentially the report had to show group figures so I had to change
number & currency formats depending on which country I was
displaying. The Globalization namespace has lots of goodies in it and I
suggest you study the documentation on that;

For some odd reason I can run my report this way:

But if I try this..

all I get is "The page cannot be found"
I can also get to the report by clicking on links found on the page I get usinghttp://localhost/ReportServer
I'd guess an IIS setting got messed up somehow, anyone know?

Local system and SQL Server Service
Hi:
A very stupid question but want to see if i have an answer.
Is it possible to run SQL Server Service and SQL Server Agent Service under local system(not Domain account) without granting SA Permissions on the server. is it ever possible to run by just granting some registry permissions and not making BUILTIN\Administrators a SA on the server.
Thx
AK
You can remove Builtin\Administrators from the server and the server will still run, but some applications relying on the presence of that login could be broken by this action.
Thanks
Laurentiu
Also, we recommend against using local system as the service. Whenever it is possible, the recommendation is to use a domain account or a local account; if these types of accounts do not meet your needs, I would suggest using Network Service instead.
For more information visit BOL:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143504.aspx#Use_startup_accounts

Server Express, but I'm not sure which would be better, or if either has the
capability to perform as I need them to. I'd appreciate any help or advice
on this.
Thanks.Install SQL Server Express on the selected Client computers. And create
Linked Server in the Primary SQL Server to each, computer.

local sql to server sql
product testing application. On each pc I would like to have a local sql
database that will have three simple tables. One for product testing
information, one for test results and one for error descriptions. I would
like to link these tables to a server based sql server. In the past, I have
accomplished the same function using Microsoft Access, by creating link
tables to the main sql server, and it has worked quite well. Can I do this
using a local sql server? I've been reading about Sql Server Compact and Sql
Server Express, but I'm not sure which would be better, or if either has the
capability to perform as I need them to. I'd appreciate any help or advice
on this.
